Colorectal Cancer Screening: A Preventive Step That Can Save Your Life
At Serenity Health, preventive care is one of the most important ways we help our patients stay healthy. One of the most effective—and often overlooked—preventive screenings is colorectal cancer screening.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, yet it is also one of the most preventable cancers when detected early. Routine screening allows healthcare providers to identify concerns before symptoms develop, often preventing cancer entirely.
Why Early Detection Matters
Colorectal cancer typically begins as small growths called polyps in the colon or rectum. These polyps usually do not cause pain or noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Over time, however, some polyps can develop into cancer.
Screening helps detect and remove these precancerous polyps early—before they become dangerous. When colorectal cancer is found at an early stage, treatment is highly effective and survival rates are significantly improved.
Many patients feel well and assume screening is unnecessary. In reality, screening is recommended before symptoms ever appear, making it one of the most powerful tools in preventive medicine.
When Should You Be Screened?
For individuals at average risk, colorectal cancer screening should begin at age 45.
Earlier screening may be recommended if you have:
A family history of colorectal cancer or colon polyps
Personal history of inflammatory bowel disease
Certain inherited conditions linked to colorectal cancer
Prior abdominal or pelvic radiation treatment
Your Serenity Health primary care provider can help determine the right screening schedule based on your personal health history and risk factors.
Types of Colorectal Cancer Screening
There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Several safe and effective screening options are available.
Colonoscopy
Recommended every 10 years (if results are normal)
A colonoscopy is considered the most comprehensive screening method. During this procedure, a specialist examines the entire colon using a small camera while the patient is comfortably sedated. Polyps can be removed during the same visit, preventing cancer from developing.
This option is often preferred for patients at higher risk or those seeking longer intervals between screenings.
At-Home Stool-Based Tests
For many average-risk patients, noninvasive at-home screening tests provide a convenient alternative.
Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)
Completed once yearly, this test checks for hidden blood in the stool.
Stool DNA Testing (such as Cologuard®)
Typically performed every three years, this test detects both blood and abnormal DNA markers associated with colorectal cancer.
If an at-home test returns abnormal results, a follow-up colonoscopy is required for further evaluation.
CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy)
Recommended every 5 years
This imaging test evaluates the colon using specialized CT scans. While less invasive, bowel preparation is still needed, and any abnormal findings require a traditional colonoscopy.
Choosing the Right Screening for You
The best screening test is the one that gets completed. At Serenity Health, we work closely with patients to choose an option that fits their comfort level, medical history, and lifestyle.
Our goal is to remove barriers to preventive care and ensure patients receive timely, evidence-based screenings that support long-term wellness.
